Senate Election Candidates

Nicolas Navarrete

Running for Fourth Year Representative
Why are you interested in becoming a RUSGA Senator?

This will be my third time running for senate. For the last two years I’ve been able to help the voices of students be heard while also throwing events for the Regis community. I love being part of the planning for big events around campus. Plus, being able to address student concerns has always been a big focus of my time here at Regis.

If elected, what would be your top two priorities to improve the student experience at Regis?

My first priority would be planning the best possible senior event. I would spent a good amount of time during summer planning events for the upcoming year. My second priority would be seeing if we have say in what our graduation gowns look like. In addition, I would see if there’s options for students who cannot afford caps and gowns, and see if I can help students afford them.

In your opinion, how best can RUSGA serve the students of Regis University through Student Senate?

The best way RUSGA can serve the students is by reaching out to offices and directors to speak on behalf of our community. These departments will listen to us more since we are coming from a well established organization on campus, filled with student leaders.

What skills and strengths do you possess that will help you to be successful in your position, if elected?q

Some of my strengths include leadership, time management and creativity. These skills allow me to plan and organize events from a tiny poker game to a 3 week long event.

What job related, volunteer, or lived experience do you have that you think has prepared you for, or would transfer well, to this position?

Since I was the second year representative last year and I’m currently the third year representative, I have a lot of experience with this type of senator position. I have learned a lot through trial and error, and I feel this will make me best suited for the fourth year representative position. I have been a leader throughout all of my time at Regis and would like to continue working for the students.

Ryan Yee

Running for Commuter Student Representative
Why are you interested in becoming a RUSGA Senator?

I want to become a RUSGA Senator simply because I'd like to become a more integrated part of Regis, in a leadership role. As a Politics student, I'm very interested in ensuring the betterment of our university, as I believe I'm passionate and driven enough to make a positive change. In my time at Regis, I've found and continued to develop my values in a way that coincides with many of my peers and I highly value their opinions and thoughts, and I think I can be part of a greater change.

If elected, what would be your top two priorities to improve the student experience at Regis?

1. I highly value student engagement and community integration. I've experienced first-hand many times being the student that sits alone, or didn't hear about an event, or went home (as a commuter) early just because they didn't find a clique or group to integrate with. That now has drastically changed for me, as I've found many ways to connect with others as a commuter. But circling back, this is my primary goal. 2. Incentivizing equity and inclusiveness. I believe Regis as a whole does a great job of this, but we can always do better as leaders and especially as advocates for others. As a Jesuit University, we need to continue maintaining these values and goals and operate with them behind the forefront of our intentions. Keeping our community well informed and respected as a whole, for me is critical to fostering a healthy collegiate environment. I discuss this in the last section of my application, but in my club, I've managed to maximize equity and inclusiveness by removing the bar of entry which may students struggle with: the cost of practices.

In your opinion, how best can RUSGA serve the students of Regis University through Student Senate?

I think by holding polls or discussions with an emphasis on the voice of the student/faculty community, letting their opinions be heard. With that said, I believe the community has unique values that must be addressed and hearing and exacting on them is vital for a functioning, integrative community.

What skills and strengths do you possess that will help you to be successful in your position, if elected?q

I'm a great problem solver, and when faced with concerns, I tend to be solution-oriented instead of dwelling in the moment. I'm great currently with time management and I'm good with the boundaries I set for myself. I use a planner for academics and meetings, and a bigger calendar for events and other essentials to my day. Being part of many clubs and maintaining a full 18 credit schedule each semester has built a better foundation for my growth in this field specifically. I've excelled in leadership roles, as I will expand upon in the next question, I'm the President of Regis University Club Archery which I founded in my first year, first semester.

What job related, volunteer, or lived experience do you have that you think has prepared you for, or would transfer well, to this position?

As a club president at Regis University, (Regis University Club Archery) I understand the level of organization, commitment, and dedication needed to have a successfully run leadership program. This year in the fall, I managed to secure a grant from the national governing body of the sport, USA Archery, which provides equipment to Regis contingent upon member participation and use of the equipment. Along with RUSGA club funding, we've managed to provide archery for free for students and faculty who are interested.

Elliot Benitez Salgado

Running for Latinx Student Representative
Why are you interested in becoming a RUSGA Senator?

I would like to further involve myself with the Regis community while also bringing representation of the community in order to make student's voices heard. As a bilingual, Mexican-American, First-Generation student, if I were granted the opportunity to represent the Latinx student population as a representative, it would be a great honor.

If elected, what would be your top two priorities to improve the student experience at Regis?

1. Student Involvement: Talking to students, hearing their opinions, and bring said opinions forward in order to further involve students and improve student experience at Regis. 2. Latinx Community Representation: As a Mexican-American, first generation, bilingual student, I am able to further understand the Latinx community. This means I would be able to further understand certain needs, goals, ambitions, etc which may be similar. Also, this would further allow me to talk to, and understand those who are part of the Latinx community when the come forward to me in order to represent their voices. This means further representation of the Latinx community in RUSGA, this would allow a chance for inclusion when brainstorming ways of improving student experience for said population.

In your opinion, how best can RUSGA serve the students of Regis University through Student Senate?

I believe having senators who engage with the community, and bring their voices forward to the Government Association is a great way of serving students of Regis University. Not only that but, involvement of the student body through events, surveys, social media, etc can further bring the voices of students into light.

What skills and strengths do you possess that will help you to be successful in your position, if elected?q

Bilingual, organization, patience, positivity, discipline, teamwork, perseverance, active listener, open-mindedness, quick thinking, and work ethic. I believe my bilingual skills will be of great use, if granted the opportunity to represent the Latinx community as a fluent Spanish speaker, and writer. As someone who did sports, concurrent enrollment classes, and clubs during my high school career, I have learned and strengthened my skills of organization, discipline, teamwork, perseverance, active listening, open-mindedness, quick thinking, and work ethic. All these skills will be of great use if elected, having a senator with motivation and work ethic is needed in order to successfully represent the community. Not just in high school, but as a second semester freshman, through work-study, hard classes, and simply the whole college process itself, I have further strengthened said skills. I believe positivity is greatly needed as a senator, being involved with the community requires being actively motivated, and having a positive mental attitude about it as well. When things get tough, you want someone who won't bring negativity and bad energy into the table but rather positive energy and vibes to further motivate the cause.

What job related, volunteer, or lived experience do you have that you think has prepared you for, or would transfer well, to this position?

I further explained this in question #4 but here's a list: Track (3rs), Basketball(3yrs), and Soccer (1yr) throughout high school Head of Programming Board --> Student Affairs First-generation College student --> Nursing Major Bilingual --> Seal of Biliteracy RU First Scholars Program

Magdalena Tapia

Running for First Generation Student Representative
Why are you interested in becoming a RUSGA Senator?

As a leader, it is important for me to help my community in any way I can. By becoming a first-generation student representative, I'm able to louden the voices of students like myself, making it easier to progress and get access to needed resources.

If elected, what would be your top two priorities to improve the student experience at Regis?

My first two priorities as a first-gen representative would be making/hosting more events for first-gen students on campus that help them embrace their identities proudly, and providing CLEARLY broadcasted resources about hidden curriculum (things you learn in college that aren't explicitly taught, like filling out FAFSA) around campus for everyone to have access to.

In your opinion, how best can RUSGA serve the students of Regis University through Student Senate?

Though the students on RUSGA Senate are meant to act as representatives of the Student Body, oftentimes no one has any idea about them. Senators, as of now, don't have much of a reputation at Regis, nor do they seem to catch the attention of the general student body (at least in a positive way). A great way RUSGA can change this and actually serve the students through Senate is by asking students what they need/wish they had on campus (not through surveys in emails that no one reads). Having tabling events with incentives (like food) are a great way to not only spread awareness about what Senate (and RUSGA) do, but also a great way to get information about what students ACTUALLY want.

What skills and strengths do you possess that will help you to be successful in your position, if elected?q

My willingness to be a loud representative of the community I am a part of is one of many skills I possess that has helped me and will continue to help me lead/represent my peers. It is important for me to be proud of who I am and help others embrace similar identities.

What job related, volunteer, or lived experience do you have that you think has prepared you for, or would transfer well, to this position?

As the creator and founder of my own program (Sprouting Change) aimed to help first-generation students get access to resources and embrace their identities, I have amazing experiences with first-gen communities in and out of Regis. These experiences (some based on research, and others on community-building events/learning) help me better understand and interact with the people I aim to serve.

Cindy Ramirez Garcia

Running for First Generation Student Representative
Why are you interested in becoming a RUSGA Senator?

I am deeply interested in becoming a RUSGA Senator to help create a greater culture of change at our University. The population at Regis has a diverse set of needs, voices, and accommodations that shouldn’t be overlooked. As a Senator, you are representing the voices that you are serving, and establishing your leadership to create an atmosphere of encouragement, positive change, and a place where students feel heard. A university where students feel the most seen is a university that allows students to excel even further. My goal is to contribute to creating that safe and thriving environment for all students. Furthermore, I want to take part in being a RUSGA Senator to grow in my abilities to serve those around me, as well as to actively develop skills that will allow me to serve the most effectively that I can.

If elected, what would be your top two priorities to improve the student experience at Regis?

If I were to be elected, one of my biggest priorities would be to continue to make resources and support more accessible to First Generation students. This has been a concern on campus that I have come to recognize serving in the RUSGA Senate as a first-year. This is a door of opportunity for Regis University to accommodate First Generation students as their numbers are rapidly increasing within the student body. Our resources need to stretch out to become available to all First Generation students, not simply a small portion of them. Another one of my priorities would be to help create more retention with First Generation students. Being a First Gen myself, I understand the difficulties that come with facing college with little to no support. These obstacles can come in the way of First Gen students truly becoming connected to life on campus. By continuing to set a firm connection with the First Gen clubs available, as well as creating further events to connect them to the family that is found in Regis, my goal is to help the students find joy within their college journey.

In your opinion, how best can RUSGA serve the students of Regis University through Student Senate?

RUSGA has been continously improving, and that is something that should continue to happen every year! RUSGA should continue to serve the students by keeping their focus not on the positions they hold, but the mission they were created to uphold. The service of RUSGA is crucial to our campus, and will continue to hold more value as it becomes further connected to the student body. It remain as significant as ever to foster an integrated relationship between the student government and the student body.

What skills and strengths do you possess that will help you to be successful in your position, if elected?q

I have a heart to serve and a commitment to bring real change in my community. Change doesn't always happen spontaneously, but it becomes a work in progress when we're willing to work towards it. I will carry myself with patience and a better availability to students than this year. I am willing to make changes within myself to become a leader that can truly make a difference. I am someone that is extremely passionate with everything that I do and I have committed to take every step while making sure it aligns with our core values as a Jesuit university.

What job related, volunteer, or lived experience do you have that you think has prepared you for, or would transfer well, to this position?

Serving as the 2024-2025 First Generation Senate, I was able to create relationships on campus that tie directly back to First Gen students. In addition, I have been able to help certain projects that are still in progress to address the lack of resources in the First Gen student population. I have the strength of already having stepped into solutions for the problem, and it's something that I want to continue to work on. Apart from this, I served as the Student Body Vice President in my high school. This included event planning, facilitating productive committees, and addressing student needs. I also founded an Environmental Stewarship club, in which I was President for, which taught me the importance of networking and making sure everyone feels heard. All of this is extremely important in any kind of leadership position.

In carrying out our duty to serve students, we want to be as accessible as possible. Whether you're a student with a concern, a community member who wants to connect, or a performer seeking a gig, please contact us.
